A Quick Guide to Herringbone Flooring

An Introduction to Herringbone Flooring

One of the biggest trends within interior design is Herringbone flooring. It is a timeless choice of flooring which can suit modern or classic style interiors. Its name origin references the bones of a herring fish and the pattern of the spine. It is available in a wide variety of designs, from different colours and tones to various sizes of planks.

Herringbone can be fitted in a wide range of patterns to suit your home and is available in real engineered wood, rigid core SPC and laminate here at Underfoot.

Fitting

It’s always a good idea to let your fitter know that your new flooring is Herringbone beforehand since it is not the same as fitting a standard flooring, it has more pieces to fit together and is quite an intricate process. As it does take more time, you should expect to pay your fitter a higher rate than you would for fitting a standard floor.

Preparation

Before fitting your Herringbone, you need to make sure that your subfloor is even, as you don’t want to get started installing your new floor then discover it is uneven, resulting in having to start all over again.

Moisture is another factor to consider, the subfloor needs to be dry and clean before laying any flooring. You can test your moisture levels with a moisture meter, you can purchase one of these at most D.I.Y shops or you can order online. The flatness of your subfloor also needs to be assessed, your fitter should be able to take a look at this beforehand and make any suggestions to achieve a flatter surface.

Underlay

Laminate

For laminate flooring we would recommend using underlay for your Herringbone Flooring if does not already comes with underlay attached to its backing. If your sub floor is concrete, our recommendation would be Underfoot Gold Underlay as it’s ultra-thick, has outstanding acoustic performance and exceptional heavy mass stability, preventing movement in your flooring to keep it looking good longer. It also has a strong vapour barrier which will help protect against damp, providing the ultimate protection against moisture rising up from the sub-floor.

If you have a wooden subfloor, you could opt for Underfoot Silver Foam Underlay. You don’t need an extreme moisture barrier as you would with a concrete subfloor, however it is still a wise to have a good quality protective later from any moisture that may rise from the subfloor. This underlay is lightweight, making it easy to fit which saves times during the installation process.

Rigid Core SPC

If you have Rigid Core SPC Herringbone, you should always use Rigid Core SPC underlay. It has an anti-slip top surface, which holds the flooring firmly in place. It makes it so much easier to fit, without the pieces sliding around.

Engineered Wood

There are a variety different types of clicking systems and installation methods for real floor Herringbone flooring, it would depend on the particular floor you select. If you are installing your floor floating nailed down or glued down you may or may not need to use underlay, consult your fitter prior to your fitting date or contact us for further advice.
